{FREEBIE} Totally Transformed: Pez Dispensers {Updated}

Last summer I introduced a mini-series on my blog where I took everyday objects and totally transformed them. I really need to get back to this series this year because I absolutely loved it!

Today I am throwing it back to one of my previously transformed items and adding in a corresponding freebie worksheet for you! Be sure to read all the way to the bottom to grab the freebie.

One of my favorite resources to use in my kindergarten classroom are CVC sliders. They really help isolate each sound and get across the blending action. I use all kinds of sliders but sometimes the paper ones just don't add that wow factor to hook my learners. In order to solve that problem, cue the transformation...

That's right! Pez Dispensers are my favorite way to use CVC sliders in the classroom! I can easily hook my learners by introducing different holiday themes or favorite movie characters.  I'm thinking this year these Minion themed dispensers would be a huge hit after the summer movie success! What little one would not be rushing to complete this center activity if they got to play with these adorable Minions?

These are the easiest to put together and don't require spending a ton of money on ink and lamination. These are perfect for the kinestetic learner and you never have to worry about mixing up any pieces during a center activity. I always ask for Pez Dispenser donations from parents and purchase on after holiday clearance when I can get them for 25 cents or less. Here are the steps on how I made my CVC sliders.

The words can easily be changed out whenever you want to mix it up. You can ever add the picture to the other side of the slider if you want to make it self correcting. This shows your students how you can make anything from their real lives into a learning experience. However, most of all, it makes learning FUN which is a must in my kindergarten classroom!

I created this quick little freebie for you all that corresponds with the Pez Dispenser CVC sliders that would be perfect to use as a literacy center, during guided reading, or as a fast finisher drawer.

To download this freebie, just click on the picture below.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B_VEQ_wwEooLTlo0VGozX2VDU0k/view?usp=sharing

The kids slide the Pez sliders out one letter at a time and write one letter per box. After blending the sounds together, they illustrate the word in the circle.

I really hope you find this idea useful as it is a huge fan favorite in my classroom and I know it will be with yours as well! If you do re-create these, I'd love to see how you use them in your classroom! Be sure to tag me on instagram so I can see what you created!

All About This Kinder Teacher

This week I'm linking up with my Teacher Tribe. I'm so thankful to have a linky with all my fellow K teachers in one place. It's part of the Kinder Tribe blog that I will be faithfully stalking this school year!

Here is a little bit more about me!

I'm really excited to embark on my 2nd year teaching. What better time to be starting out in this profession than with all the best resources and collaboration at your fingertips!

ESGI - Can't Teach Without It!

As a first year teacher, I had a general idea what I was getting myself into going into the classroom. Teaching the alphabet and counting to 100. Navigating the troubles of lost glue stick caps and tattle tales. Lesson planning and grading.

What I wasn't aware of, was just how many hours I would spend testing and not teaching. It got so bad that some weeks I felt like I did nothing but test all day every day. I knew I was missing out and so did my little ones. My kinder kids were only five years old and deserved to have as much fun with hands on learning activities and not doing meaningless worksheets while I spent hours testing students one on on with a mess of flash cards and assessment papers to sort through.

https://uwaterloo.ca/centre-for-teaching-excellence/teaching-resources/teaching-tips/assessing-student-work/grading-and-feedback/responding-writing

Doing what teachers do best, I spent my "free time" after school searching Pinterest and reading teacher blogs. I stumbled upon a review of a site called ESGI and the tagline promoted saving 400 hours over the course of the year.

Doing a quick bit of math, I was appalled. In my school, 400 hours is the equivalent of 67 full days of teaching. 67 full days. Let that sink in for a moment. That is over a third of the year. What could you do if you had 67 extra days teaching your students? Imagine the possibilities! Enough said. ESGI had me hook, line, and sinker!

Well, now that I have hopefully piqued your interest, let me explain some of my favorite features as well as give you a deal that will save you $40 along with your 400 hours.

Perhaps my favorite feature is that ESGI does the work for you. Their logo says Click. Click. Done. and it is literally as simple as that.

Sick of sorting through flash cards and papers to make sure you have the right set for each child?
They save each child's data so you only test what you need and it is just a click away when you need it.
All I have to do is hit the left or right arrow on my keyboard and it records all my data without ever having to lift a pen.

Constantly graphing the percent of students meeting each skill to show your administration?
No graph making for you! The graphs automatically update as each child is assessed. Your principal will LOVE being able to see all your data in one place constantly being updated.

Need a parent letter documenting a child's progress and things to work on at home?
You don't even have to touch the keyboard. They have you covered! Just print and you are good to go!

So you've told the parents what to work on at home but they don't have any materials to do so?
Obviously ESGI has your back! Look no further than customized and dated flash cards for each child!

Spending hours analyzing all your different test scores trying to figure out what topic is least known that you need to review?
Well it is already done in a handy little graph for each topic before you even realize you need it.

Can't quite remember if you tested all your students with absences and pull-outs?
A chart listing each child's name and every test you have created shows up highlighting the ones still yet to test. No more forgetting to assess a child because you forgot to add it to a post-it note.

Now I know what you might be thinking. Well, it sounds great and all, but I have a very specific set of assessments that I am required to do so this site can't possibly help. Wrong! ESGI is 100% customizable so you can make it exactly suit your teaching needs.

In addition to the over 200 assessments they have built in, there is a text explorer that allows you to create all your own tests and even share them with other teachers in your school or across your district! I kept the generic pre-loaded tests that aligned with my needs like letter names and sounds to save as much time as possible. However, in one quick afternoon, I was able to completely customize and enter in all my district's personalized assessments. The best part, once they are done, they are saved forever (even if your account expires) and you never have to re-create the system.

Now, not everyone is super tech savvy, and ESGI has the best customer support library to help! They have webinar videos that walk you through each and every single step to create your own tests. Here is a little screenshot from one of the videos that I watched when creating my own tests.
They have a custom library with hundreds of items, shapes, colors, you name it! No test is too big or too small a job that ESGI can't handle!

Now seriously, this all sounds too good to be true! I know! I never could have imagined I would find a resource this unbelievably lifesaving as a first year teacher. All I can say is I am so fortunate to have found it my first year teaching. Now I never have to live without it! For all you veteran teachers out there, it is not too late to join the party! Don't go another year suffering through the never ending assessment paper trail!

Whatever you do, don't delay on this invaluable resource! They offer a free 60 day trial to test it out and see if it is worth making the investment. All I can say is you won't need more than a week to realize if you could only have one resource for the year, this would be the must have.

Try ESGI out for this last round of end of year assessments. The 60 day trial will take you to June which will be more than enough time to test out the program, get your assessments loaded and do everything you can to get your administration to pay for this resource for the upcoming school year.

If you are a new customer to ESGI you can save $40 off the regular yearly price of $199 making a year of hassle-free assessment only $159! A true steal when you consider adding up the price of all those coffee's you drink to keep you functioning during the never ending assessment periods. Just use the promo code: B4155 to save today!

Here's to a hassle-free end of the year assessment thanks to ESGI!

II

Two simple lines. It's strange to think those two little lines can hold so much meaning in life. Pause. Take a break. Pause. Temporary rest. Pause.

You see them all around you: when using your TV remote, when watching a YouTube video, when listening to a voicemail, or when playing a video game.

Right after the new year, I had to take a pause from blogging and my social media. I got a new student with severe behavioral concerns who really needed me to be more present in the classroom and in life in general.

Less worrying about taking pictures for a blog post or Instagram. Less worrying about updating a Facebook page or sending a tweet. Less worrying about hashtags and pinning on Pinterest.

More unconditional love. More cheerleading every small victory. More energy and positivity. More creativity and dedication. More joy and passion.

This little five year old made me really slow down and reflect on my teaching. Surely, students who have mastered 100 sight words in kindergarten deserves celebrating. But you know what, being able to sit in a chair for five minutes was deserving of an Olympic medal for this child.

I truly saw how important it was to slow down, take it one baby step at a time, and celebrate every single victory no matter how small. His pride in being recognized for the positives made all the very stressful days worthwhile.

In today's society, everything moves at a rapid pace. Fast food, fast wifi, fast cars, fast, fast, fast. The goal is to move faster than anyone else, and if you aren't the best, well then you better catch up before you are left in the dust.

Well five year olds don't work that way. All too often, the innocence of childhood is lost and children are coming to school with very adult-like behaviors and schema. Childhood doesn't need to be a race to the finish line. After all, they are only five once and if we try and speed up time we can't get it back.

Don't be afraid.
Use those two little lines.
Pause.

Show Us What You Bought

Let me break this down for you...

First year teacher + 28% off = excessive TpT spending!

I am not ashamed to admit that I went extremely overboard during this sale. Annnnd, I was only truly purchasing for up to November since I am already anticipating what I will buy during the Cyber Monday sale when the paychecks start rolling in.

Things I told myself to sleep at night:
1. I had a gift certificate.
2. I used soooo many TpT credits for extra savings.
3. I did set a limit and did not break it. Victory!
4. Everything can be re-used year after year.
5. It's for the children!

I'm linking up with Blog Hoppin' to show you all what I bought.
Note: All glitter frames are courtesy of Glitter Meets Glue Designs.

http://imbloghoppin.blogspot.com/2014/08/show-us-what-you-bought-linky.html

I was very strategic in my purchasing aiming for the most bang for my buck. I also wanted to cover every aspect of teaching from morning work to classroom management. I think I was pretty successful!

Here are the 22 things that I ended up with broken up into categories...

First up: The Printable Princess. If you are a kindergarten teacher you eat, sleep and breathe The Printable Princess! I totally splurged on her center activities and this portion packed the heftiest price tag. However, I have up until December completely covered with phenomenal hands on activities that the kids will love and as a first year teacher, that is more than I could ask for!

Next, I purchased a few more colored ink centers that would last me year round. I loved the alphabet bundle because it had everything you could dream for and more for each letter of the alphabet. One of my absolute favorite centers to have in kindergarten is Write the Room because it keeps kids moving. I wanted a year long bundle so I couldn't have to search for different themed cards and this was by far the best deal of all. The cards are so colorful and the coordinating worksheets are so user-friendly. I know this will be a fan favorite! Finally, I purchased the holiday and seasonal literacy centers bundle. I could not turn down this bundle no matter how much my wallet tried to stop it. These centers are a one stop shop that has the entire year covered!

Seeing as I already ran out of colored ink mid way through printing my first pack, I knew black and white printables were the way to go. These printables will last me an entire year and have all my morning work, math and literacy centers covered. I am all about making life easier as a first year teacher and these ladies are making that possible!

I have been planning my first classroom for as long as I can remember. Now, through social media sites, organization and classroom decor has been kicked into high gear. These packs have me covered from everything I need to decorate my classroom as well as staying organized through binders, storage drawers, and posting the CCSS around the room. I cannot wait to see these in action in the classroom! It is going to be so bright and cheery!

Finally, what classroom would be complete without a little management and assessment action? I am officially obsessed with these Keys to Success. I know the kiddos are going to love collecting these tags and they will be great to communicate success with parents. Since my time is going to be so limited in half-day k, I need to make sure that those brains are always learning. These fast finisher sets will be a lifesaver! Finally, I want to check in and see how my kids are feeling with concept mastery. This road trip themed set provides the perfect visuals and is so kid friendly. I know it will be a hit in the classroom and help keep me informed as to who needs extra help.

It has literally taken me all my willpower to stay off the computer today because I know I could easily go buy 20 more things in a heartbeat. How many more days until the Cyber Monday sale because clearly I am counting down the seconds!

Currently: Five for August

It pains my teacher heart to say that August has finally arrived.

http://www.someecards.com/usercards/viewcard/MjAxMi02ZmQ3OGIzODQ5NmMzMmM2

My entire life I have always had two full months of summer vacation: July and August. We have always started after Labor Day. However, this year, my vacation didn't start until the end of the last week of June and I go back in less than two weeks. As excited as I am to meet my first set of my own kinder babies, just a little bit more vacation (to prep of course) would be lovely!

As much as I like to play the what day is it card...

http://www.someecards.com/usercards/viewcard/MjAxMi01YzhiOWFjMzZmYjYwMzBh

My blogging buddies here like to keep me informed. Kacey at Doodle Bugs Teaching always reminds me when another Friday rolls around, and Farley at Oh Boy Fourth Grade always gets me on the first of the month. Since these linky parties are my favorite thing, I will suck up my summer sadness and share all my back to school excitement with the Five for Friday and Currently parties combined.

http://doodlebugsteaching.blogspot.com/2014/08/five-for-friday-linky-partyaugust-1.html

In case you missed the memo, I got a job teaching kindergarten! I could not be more excited! As all kinder teachers know, those babies steal your heart in a second!
My little 8 year old cousin is a teacher in the making. When she found out I had a job she could not wait to send me a list of things I need to do to prep. The "beafwear" and "elebetic" charts are my favorites.
This online teaching community has truly changed my life! When I posted this picture on Instagram asking for help, Rebecca Seeley replied in literally seconds and got right to work creating the most adorable labels that were even better than I could have dreamed of. If you need a TpT store to find some deals for the back to school sale, hit up her store by clicking HERE. You won't be sorry!
Speaking of the sale...did I mention that as a first year teacher, I might have a slight addiction to bundles? Once I checked into TpT bundles anonymous, I was able to cut my list in half from over $400 to the $200 range. Where did all the extra bundles go? Onto my wishlist and then some. When does the next TpT sale come around because I will be stocking up big time!

It is crazy to think that I will have been blogging for two years this month! So many things have happened in such a short period of time and I cannot wait to reflect on my journey when the time nears! But for now, I am off to find more items for the TpT sale and hopefully check some things off my to-do list. Lets hope I win some of those TpT gift certificate giveaways because this first year teacher is broke!

Kindergarten Here I Come!

I have been anxiously awaiting the day when I could write this blog post since starting my blog nearly 2 years ago. That special day is finally here! I received my official job letter in the mail and I am so very happy to say that I will be a kindergarten teacher this fall!

Never would I have ever imagined that as a college graduate, in one of the worst economic times, that I would have a public school teaching job and even more, actually have to turn down other job offers! There is nothing more I can say than I am truly blessed! I know that teaching is where I am meant to be and I am so happy to be able to fulfill that childhood dream of mine!

I have so much to do to get prepared in so little time! (Hence the reason I have been quite M.I.A. on my blog lately.) I have been making a long list of all the things I have to prep and I have no idea when I will be able to see what my classroom looks like.

Leave me a comment below with something I must include in my preparation checklist so I don't leave anything out! Also, if you are a kindergarten teacher, leave me a comment with a link to your blog so I can get inspired!

Now I am off to continue my trend of stalking Pinterest and buying from TpT like a mad woman!
